Greyhounds and Christmas: Adjusting to Festive Routines

Helping your greyhound stay comfortable during the holidays.

The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and festive traditions. However, for greyhounds, who thrive on routine and a calm environment, the busy nature of Christmas celebrations can be a little overwhelming. With their sensitive nature and unique needs, it’s essential to take a few extra steps to ensure your greyhound remains comfortable and happy during the festivities. Here are our top tips for helping your greyhound adjust to the holiday season.

1. Stick to Their Routine

Greyhounds are creatures of habit and feel most secure when their daily routine stays consistent. Try to maintain their feeding, walking, and bedtime schedules, even amidst the holiday chaos. This sense of predictability can help them feel calm and grounded.

2. Create a Safe Space

With visitors coming and going, the house can become noisy and unfamiliar. Set up a quiet, designated area where your greyhound can retreat if they need a break. Include their bed, some favourite toys, and a water bowl. Let guests know that this is your greyhound’s sanctuary and should be respected.

3. Mind the Decorations

Christmas trees, ornaments, and lights can be fascinating to curious greyhounds but may pose safety risks. Secure your tree to prevent tipping and avoid using fragile decorations near the bottom. Keep any electrical cords out of reach and consider using pet-safe, non-toxic materials for your decorations.

4. Monitor Holiday Treats

While it’s tempting to share holiday goodies, many festive foods are unsafe for greyhounds. Avoid feeding them chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, or anything containing artificial sweeteners like xylitol. Keep alcohol and caffeine out of their reach, and make sure guests know not to slip them table scraps.

5. Gradual Introduction to Guests

Greyhounds can be shy or sensitive around new people. If you’re hosting guests, allow your greyhound to approach them on their own terms. Educate visitors, especially children, on how to interact gently and respectfully with your pet.

6. Calm New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Fireworks and loud noises during New Year’s Eve can be especially stressful for greyhounds. Keep them indoors, close windows and curtains to reduce noise, and play soothing music to create a calming environment. If your greyhound shows severe anxiety, consult your vet about options like anxiety wraps or natural calming aids.

7. Include Them in Festive Activities

Greyhounds are part of the family and enjoy being involved. Take them on a festive walk to see holiday lights or include them in gift opening with their own wrapped treat or toy. These small gestures can make them feel part of the celebrations while keeping things fun and relaxed.

8. Avoid Overstimulation

While it’s great to include your greyhound, be mindful of signs that they’re becoming overstimulated. Excessive yawning, pacing, or attempts to hide may indicate they’ve had enough excitement. Respect their limits and allow them to retreat as needed.

9. Prepare for Travel

If you’re travelling with your greyhound over the holidays, plan ahead to make the journey stress-free. Bring along their bed or blanket, food, water, and any medication they may need. Make frequent stops for exercise and bathroom breaks, and ensure they’re safely secured in the car.

10. Celebrate Their Comfort

Ultimately, the best gift you can give your greyhound this Christmas is their comfort and well-being. By planning ahead and considering their needs, you’ll ensure that they can enjoy the festive season as much as you do.
