Greys4Pets is a Brisbane-based program that supports and re-homes retired greyhounds.
It has been operating under current management since January, 2021, and has helped almost 1000 dogs – greyhounds and other breeds – in that time.
President and chief executive officer Kate Johnson leads a team of about 30 volunteers and one employee from her home in The Gap and says the organisation is a little different to other re-homing programs.
“We have access to surgeons, we are less tight with money, and we have a lot of medical background in our volunteers,” she says.
“We can take care of rehab injuries so we could go to the track tomorrow and pick up a dog that has broken its leg and we would do the surgery, rehabilitation, visits, aqua-therapy, etc.
Blondie was fostered for two months before finding her forever home.
“We want to support the people who want to do the right thing to re-home their greyhounds rather than going on Gumtree or posting on Facebook Marketplace.
“We help them re-home more safely because we are vetting people and going through that process with them.”
Kate says Greys4Pets is also able to help a higher volume of dogs than other organisations of a similar size as she has digital software in place to streamline the process.
It is her goal to eventually establish an Australia-wide industry body to help regulate the animal re-homing industry and support smaller organisations with training, marketing and networking opportunities.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
FOSTER
Previously, Greys4Pets was keeping dogs at kennels and footing the bill until a foster could be found to take care of them, but this was proving unsustainable so has been temporarily stopped and dogs go straight to foster homes.
This means the organisation can only help as many dogs as there are foster carers.
You can apply to foster a dog – or find out more information – by emailing Kate and the team via admin@rescues4pets.com.au
Can you open your home to a grey?
ATTEND EVENTS
Greys4Pets raises money by selling greyhound and dog gear (martingale collars, dog pajamas, etc) at markets around Brisbane on the third Saturday of each month.
Volunteers are always needed to run the stalls – and to bring along their dogs as models.
They also hold an adoption day at Bunnings Keperra on the first Saturday of each month.
Keep an eye out for the next event, and email Kate (admin@rescues4pets.com.au) if you would like to get involved.
LEND YOUR SKILLS
Like any organisation, Greys4Pets requires people with skills to keep it running behind the scenes.
If you have a little bit of spare time to help out with administration, driving, book-keeping, dog training or anything in between, we would love for you to join our community of volunteers.
Email Kate (admin@rescues4pets.com.au) if you would like to be part of the team.
DONATE
Rehabilitating and re-homing pets is not cheap.
Greys4Pets charges a small adoption fee when dogs find their forever home, but this is not enough to cover all of the vet bills, transport, food, bedding and care that is required by the dogs that come through the organisation.
